The full form of the CELPIP test is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program which allows test takers to show their ability to function in English. Just like the IELTS, the CELPIP test evaluates the ability of test-takers in four language skills – listening, writing, reading, and speaking.
The article is to guide you on how to ace the speaking portion of the CELPIP test. The celpip speaking tasks include eight tasks and the time allotted for completing these tasks are 15-20 minutes. These tasks are:
- Give advice- As the name suggests, you have to give advice to someone. On the screen, you will be given a situation in which you have to advise. The question of this section on the computer screen may look like this- Your friend has been spending time extra time with friends doing activities such as smoking, drinking, etc., and not paying attention to studies at all. If this continues, he may harm his health and also fail exams. Give advice to your friend telling him/her what he/she should do and what he/she should not do.
- Personal experience- In this section of the test, you will have to talk about your personal experience. You will have to show your storytelling score in order to score well. The main point that you have to keep in mind is to keep your story interesting. For example, you can say “I went to Delight theatre with my best friend, Jane, to watch Mission Impossible movie.” Instead of simply saying “I went to watch a movie”
- Describing a scene- Here all you have to do is talk about the things that you can see in a picture on the computer screen. In order to give a better description you may assume that the person isn’t able to see what you are seeing and your job is to give an accurate description of it. You may get an image of a marketplace and you will have to give a clear description. While answering it is best to include small details such as the activities of people, description of shops, and shopkeepers, etc.
- Make predictions- In this also you will get a picture but this time your job will be to predict instead of simply describing the picture. It is essential for you to understand the difference between description and prediction. Use words such as I feel that, I think, its likely, etc.
- Making comparisons and persuading- In this section, you have to compare things or people and convince the other person to choose the same thing as you. For instance, you and your friend are going to watch a movie. But you like one movie and your friend likes the other one. Your task is to convince your friend to make the same choice as yours.
- Dealing with a difficult situation- In this part, you will be given a tough situation and will be asked the course of action that you would take in order to deal with the situation.
- Expressing opinions- This section will test your expression ability. For doing this you will get 30 seconds for preparing and 90 seconds for recording the response. Don’t forget to give the reason for your opinion.
- Describing an unusual situation- This is a bit tricky section. You will get a picture of strange objects or odd-looking creatures and you will be asked to describe it to your family or friend.
The best way to get an excellent score in this section is to firstly understand the format of the test, and secondly, understand the type of questions that are asked and last but not least is to practice.
