The First Seven Days: Healing and Protection
During the initial week after your hair implant you will notice a thin layer of scales covering each graft and some redness and swelling that peaks around day 2 then gradually subsides over the following days. Discomfort is generally minor and can be managed with occasional pain relief medication. To protect the grafts, use a saline spray or the prescribed post-operative mist, sleep propped up on two pillows and avoid touching or scratching the area.
Gentle Cleansing Protocol
Beginning on day 2 or 3, rinse your scalp gently using a cup filled with baby shampoo and water; do not use a showerhead directly on the grafts. Pat the area dry without rubbing to maintain graft integrity and prevent infection.
Resuming Normal Activities
By day 2 you may return to desk-based work; avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting or bending for the first week to minimise swelling and protect the healing grafts.
Week 2 to Week 4: The Shedding Phase
This phase is characterised by “shock loss” when the transplanted hairs fall out, leaving dormant bulbs beneath the skin. Your scalp surface will appear fully healed, redness will be minimal and any residual discomfort tolerable. You may resume light shampooing and conditioning, avoid tight helmets or direct sun exposure, and engage in mild activities while protecting the scalp with a loose-fitting scarf or hat.
Months 3 to 5: Early Regrowth
Around month 3 fine, colourless baby hairs begin to emerge, though density remains uneven and gaps will be visible. New hairs often feel wavy or wiry initially. Continue gentle shampooing, apply any prescribed medications such as finasteride or minoxidil, and maintain a healthy scalp care routine.
Months 6 to 9: Visible Transformation
Between months 6 and 9 you will observe a significant increase in coverage, often reaching approximately 60 percent of final density. Hair texture and thickness continue to improve; styling concerns are minimal as growth becomes more uniform.
One-Year Check-Up and Ongoing Aftercare
At the one-year mark schedule a comprehensive review to confirm results and discuss any additional density treatments. Recommended permanent aftercare includes applying sunscreen to the scalp, maintaining overall health practices and considering DHT blockers to protect existing non-transplanted hair.
Common Post-Operative Concerns and Solutions
Skin breakouts in months 1 to 3 often result from ingrown hairs or small sores; applying a warm compress may relieve discomfort, and contacting your clinic is advised if symptoms worsen. Persistent redness lasting more than 6 weeks may indicate hypersensitivity; a dermatologist-supervised mild topical corticosteroid can be applied. Variations in hair growth rate or continued lengthening beyond one year are normal, as full maturation can extend up to 18 months.
